This standard specifies methods for determining the luminous and solar characteristics of building glazing required for lighting, heating and cooling calculations, as well as for comparison purposes. It covers conventional glazing and absorbing or reflecting solar-control glazing installed in vertical or horizontal openings, and provides formulae for single, double and triple glazing. It applies to transparent materials, except those that significantly transmit ambient radiation in the wavelength range from 5 µm to 50 µm, particularly certain plastics. Under specific conditions, materials that diffuse incident light are treated as conventional transparent materials. Angular properties are excluded, although relevant research is summarized in E.1 to E.3. The formulae enable exact spectral calculations but do not address measurement uncertainty. Such uncertainty is acceptable for simple systems that have been properly measured, but it accumulates in complex systems and should be taken into account in the final results. An interface is a surface characterized by the transmittance and reflectance of luminous intensities.
