Advancing Valorising Slag: establishing a Belgian Standard Framework for Alkaline Activated Materials.

Retour vers articles scientifiques

In Belgium, alkaline activated concrete (AAC) made from slags is gaining traction, especially in Flanders where large volumes of non-ferrous slag are available. However, the lack of a suitable standardisation framework limits its wider adoption, confining most projects to small-scale pilot applications. Existing standards (e.g., NBN B 15-100) do not adequately address alkaline activated materials (AAM) as binders. To tackle this gap, a dedicated working group on AAM was set up in 2022 within the Belgian commission E104 Concrete. Bringing together over 30 experts from research, industry, federations, and certification bodies (including international members), the group aims to establish performance-based criteria and methodologies to enable broader integration of AAM and AAC in the construction sector.
